Community development practice

A key aim of CDF is to promote and improve work that strengthens communities.

It is important to learn from practice to understand what methods and values are most effective in different circumstances. We do this through:

  • practice development
  • Practice Links programme
  • networking
  • work with projects
  • commissioned work.

Practice development

We develop models or theories about how different ways of working with communities can achieve desired aims. We apply them to a range of issues, from increasing the capacity of communities and institutions to work in partnership, reducing crime and the fear of crime, to regenerating the social economy of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Practice Links Programme

Our Practice Links programme is an England-wide network of people working in different aspects of community development. The programme is an important tool for us to keep our ideas up-to-date and ensure that they are relevant to policy makers and practitioners.

Networking

Sharing our expertise, and learning from others' experiences, happens through networking, formally and informally. We value our conversations and connections with a range of organisations and individuals, and welcome the opportunities to work in partnership wherever possible.

Projects

From time to time we are able to test our ideas through specific projects that focus on a particular approach and area of policy. We are also involved in local projects which help us to maintain a close understanding of local experience on a wide range of issues.

Commissioned work

In addition, CDF undertakes specific pieces of work commissioned by government, local authorities and other agencies which involve extended research and evaluation. Recent examples include the Survey of Community Workers, carried out in conjunction with the Community Development Exchange (CDX), and involvement in a Bradford mental health project using a community development approach to promote social inclusion. This was part of a European wide study, co-ordinated by the Combined European Bureau for Social Development (CEBSD).
